Snoring Facts
- Snoring occurs when the air passage is hindered, thus inhibiting usual and easy breathing while asleep.
- Snoring can be caused by a nasal blockage (i.e. when somebody has a cold) and as the personal is force to breathe through their mouth they can begin to snore. If the mouth is open, the tongue is forced back and pushes the uvula against the back of the throat.
- The noise level of snoring increases as the breathing passage becomes more blocked.
- Throat muscles stay wide open when the body is awake, but at the onset of sleep they relax inwards. When they relax too much they block the breathing passage and snoring occurs.
- There are many reasons why the throat can become blocked by muscles that swell or relax too much, including: blocked nose, sleeping pills, sinusitis, enlarged tonsils, alcohol, smoking, an allergy to mold, dust, eggs or wheat, cough mixture containing dextromethorphan and excess body weight. Other causes include a large uvula & deformities in the nasal pathway
- From middle age people maybe begin to snore - particularly if they are overweight.
- Snoring is often hereditary.
- Unless they are told, most snorers do not realize they snore. However, some people can hear themselves snore when they are half awake.
- Children do snore & usually it is because their adenoids are enlarged or when they have a blocked nose. Snoring may also occur in small babies as their airways are still relatively small.
- For some, snoring can also take place in a seated position.
