Snoring Facts
- Snoring occurs when the air passage is hindered, thus inhibiting usual and easy breathing while asleep.
- Snoring can be caused by a nasal blockage (i.e. when somebody has a cold) and as the personal is force to breathe through their mouth they can begin to snore. When the mouth is open, the tongue gets pushed back and makes the uvula to push against the back of the throat.
- Muscles in the throat, which are open while the body is awake, relax and sag during sleep. Snoring occurs when the airways is blocked by muscles that relax too much.
- The noise level of snoring increases as the breathing passage becomes more blocked.
- From middle age people maybe begin to snore - particularly if they are overweight.
- An air blockage whereby the muscles of the throat either become too lax or swell can be caused by smoking, alcohol, sleeping pills, enlarged tonsils, blocked nose, sinusitis, excess body weight, cough mixture containing dextromethorphan and an allergy to eggs, wheat, dust or mold. Other causes are an oversized uvula or nasal pathway deformities.
- Snoring can be a hereditary condition.
- Unless they are told, most snorers do not realize they snore. However, some people can hear themselves snore when they are half awake.
- Children do snore & usually it is because their adenoids are enlarged or when they have a blocked nose. Small babies have pretty small breathing passages, and this can cause them to snore sometimes.
- Snoring can occur while in a seated position for some people.
