Snoring Facts

  • Snoring develops in situations where the air passage is blocked, thereby inhibiting normal breathing while sleeping.


  • The muscles in the throat are kept open while a person is awake, but when they are asleep they relax and close up. Snoring occurs when these muscles collapse (i.e. become too lax), creating a blockage at the airway.


  • The more the throat is blocked by the muscles, the louder the snoring.


  • Nasal blockages can cause snoring because the person has to breathe through their mouth. If the mouth is open, the tongue is forced back and pushes the uvula against the back of the throat.
