Snoring Facts
- Snoring occurs when the air passage is hindered, thus inhibiting usual and easy breathing while asleep.
- The decibel rating of snoring is directly related to the amount the muscles relax.
- Throat muscles stay wide open when the body is awake, but at the onset of sleep they relax inwards. Snoring happens when these muscles become too relaxed and start to block the throat.
- Snoring can be the result of a nasal blockage, when the mouth has to be used to inhale. The tongue is pushed back when the mouth is open, and makes the uvula to press against the throat.
- Blockages in the throat can be caused by alcohol, smoking, sleeping pills, blocked nose, sinusitis, enlarged tonsils, cough mixture containing dextromethorphan, excess body weight & an allergy to dust, mold, wheat or eggs. Other reasons include deformities in the nasal pathway and a large uvula.
- Snoring can be passed on my parent to child.
- From middle age people maybe begin to snore - particularly if they are overweight.
- For some, snoring can also take place in a seated position.
- Unless they are told, most snorers do not realize they snore. However, some people can hear themselves snore when they are half awake.
- Children sometimes snore - usually as a result of enlarged adenoids or a nose blockage, Small babies have pretty small breathing passages, and this can cause them to snore sometimes.
