Why do I get acid reflux?
You can obtain acid reflux and heartburn in various ways. Eating a large meal, an over-acidic stomach, H. pylori bacterium, a damaged lower esophageal sphincter or digestive problems.
A damaged LES (lower esophageal sphincter) and esophagus is the most common reason for acid reflux. acid reflux damage is sometimes nominal, but it is sometimes extreme. However it is easily cured!
Acid reflux, heartburn happens when abrasions on the esophagus are brought into contact with fumes from the stomach acid. This can cause a lot of pain - best described as a burning sensation in the chest. It is the same painful feeling as getting acidic vinegar in a cut.
Pain can be felt if you drink tomato or orange juice and the acid in the juice comes into contact with grazes on the esophagus. People who don't feel pain obviously don't get acid reflux or heartburn because their digestive organs are working effectively.

What is Acid Reflux?
The medical name for Acid Reflux is Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or more commonly, GERD. Acid reflux (GERD) is the regurgitation (back up, or refluxed) of stomach acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux is often confused with intermittent heartburn because heartburn is its most common symptom! While regular heartburn is only very occasional, GERD heartburn usually happens at least twice a week for at least three months, and can badly injure your esophagus.
Acid reflux disease occurs when the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus is frequent enough to damage the esophagus and/or control your daily life. Located at the top of your stomach is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which opens and shuts to let food enter. It also prevents the acid in your stomach from backing up into your esophagus. With GERD, the LES opens at the incorrect time, exposing the esophagus to stomach acid.
GERD can lead to more acute medical problems that necessitate hospital stays and possibly surgery. Some people who suffer from acid reflux disease can get stomach acid in their lungs and start wheezing or coughing. If stomach acid gets all the way up into the throat, it can result in pain (or a 'sore throat'). The enamel on your teeth can be worn away by stomach acid if it gets into your mouth..
