Why do I get GERD?

You can get GERD and heartburn from a number of different things. Some of these can be: A damaged lower esophageal sphincter, an over acidic stomach, eating a large meal, H. pylori bacterium or digestive problems.

Most people experience GERD because of a damaged (LES) lower esophageal sphincter and esophagus. Sometimes this GERD damage is minimal and other times it is quite severe. However it can be fixed very easily!

People get GERD and heartburn when stomach acid vapor and esophagus lesions come into contact. This contact will create pain - like a burning feeling in the chest. It feels similar to getting acidic vinegar in an open wound.

If someone is experiencing pain when they drink acidic juice (like orange or tomato) they probably have a damaged esophagus. Clearly, people that don't suffer from that pain don't get GERD or heartburn because their digestive system is working effectively.

Can I Correct It?

About GERD

GERD - heartburn diagram Five to seven per cent of the global population (men, women and children) have Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). (Pervasiveness found on once daily heartburn.) Weekly heartburn and/or acid regurgitation occurs in 19.8% of worldwide population.
People have a tendency to misdiagnose their GERD or ignore the symptoms, even though it is a widespread problem. This is disappointing, because in general GERD can be easily fixed. There can be nasty consequences if it isn't suitably taken care of.

Persistent heartburn is the most frequent, but not the only symptom of GERD. (Symptoms may not even be present amongst some people who carry the disease.) Heartburn is so widespread, that most people don't realize they could have GERD. In most cases, GERD is either self treated or handled incorrectly.

GERD is a chronic disease. To totally eliminate GERD, you have to treat it for a long time - even after all the symptoms have vanished. Issues of daily living, and compliance with long-term use of medication need to be addressed as well. This can be accomplished through follow-up, support and education. Learn More about GERD
