What is Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux - heartburn diagram Acid Reflux is called Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. Acid reflux (GERD) is the occurrence of stomach acid being regurgitated (back up, or refluxed) into the gullet (esophagus). GERD can occasionally be confused with infrequent heartburn because heartburn is the most frequent symptom of GERD. Regular heartburn is much less frequent than the heartburn symptom of GERD - which usually occurs at least two days a week for a minimum of three months, and can seriously damage your esophagus.

Acid reflux disease is when the stomach acid comes into contact with the esophagus often enough to damage the esophagus and/or control your daily life. A muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is located at the top of your stomach, which ordinarily opens and closes to let food in. In addition, it shelters the esophagus by preventing stomach acid from refluxing. With Acid Reflux disease, the LES opens at the wrong moments, opening up the esophagus and allowing stomach acid to come into contact with it.

GERD can result in critical medical conditions that require hospitalization and even surgery. Some acid reflux patients can develop a wheeze or cough. This is the result of stomach acid making its way into the lungs. A sore throat in acid reflux suffers is the result of acid burning the throat. The enamel on your teeth can be worn away by stomach acid if it gets into your mouth.. More on Acid Reflux
