Why do I get acid reflux?
Acid reflux and heartburn can have several origins. Some are: H. pylori bacterium, an over acidic stomach, eating a large meal, digestive problems or a damaged lower esophageal sphincter.
The majority of people experience acid reflux because they have damaged their (LES) lower esophageal sphincter and esophagus. Sometimes this acid reflux damage is minimal and other times it is quite severe. However it is easily cured!
Stomach acid fumes coming into contact with lacerations on their esophagus is the cause of acid reflux, heartburn. When they come into contact it will cause pain - best described as a burning sensation in the chest. It's the same kind of pain as getting acidic vinegar on a cut.
Pain can be felt if you drink tomato or orange juice and the acid in the juice comes into contact with grazes on the esophagus. Evidently, if drinking acidic juice doesn't cause someone pain they probably never get acid reflux or heartburn because their digestive system has no problems.

What is Acid Reflux?
Acid Reflux is medically called Gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly referred to as GERD. Acid reflux (GERD) is the occurrence of stomach acid being regurgitated (back up, or refluxed) into the gullet (esophagus). GERD is often erroneously taken as sporadic heartburn because heartburn is the most frequent symptom of GERD. Regular heartburn is much less frequent than the heartburn symptom of GERD - which usually occurs at least two days a week for at least 3 months and can damage your esophagus.
The disease occurs when the ascension of stomach acid into the esophagus is regular enough to impact your daily life and/or damage the esophagus. At the top of the stomach there is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which opens and shuts to let food enter. In addition, it shelters the esophagus by preventing stomach acid from refluxing. If someone has GERD, their lower esophageal sphincter will open at the wrong time, allowing the harmful stomach acid into the esophagus.
Acid reflux disease can result in major health problems that need hospital treatment. Wheezing or coughing is another symptom of GERD, and occurs when the person gets acid into their lungs. A sore throat in acid reflux suffers is the result of acid burning the throat. If acid gets all the way into the mouth, it can begin to dissolve tooth enamel.. More on Acid Reflux
