What is Acid Reflux?
The medical name for Acid Reflux is Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or more commonly, GERD. When stomach acid is regurgitated back up into the esophagus, it is known as acid reflux, or GERD. Acid reflux is frequently wrongly taken for heartburn because heartburn is the biggest indicator of GERD. Normal heartburn is much more infrequent that the acid reflux disease symptom of heartburn, which usually happens two or more days a week for a minimum of 12 weeks, and can harm your esophagus.
GERD occurs when the stomach acid rising into the esophagus is common enough to impact your daily life and/or damage the esophagus. Located at the top of your stomach is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which lets food in by opening and shutting. Also, it shields the esophagus by blocking stomach acid from it. With GERD, the LES opens at the incorrect time, allowing acid from the stomach to get into the esophagus, where it doesn't belong.
GERD can lead to more acute medical problems that require hospitalization and even surgery. Some people who suffer from acid reflux disease can get stomach acid in their lungs and start wheezing or coughing. GERD suffers can also develop a sore throat if the acid reaches it. If stomach acid enters the mouth it can eat away at tooth enamel.. More on Acid Reflux
