What is Acid Reflux?
The medical name for Acid Reflux is Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or more commonly, GERD. When stomach acid is regurgitated back up into the esophagus, it is known as acid reflux, or GERD. GERD is often erroneously taken as sporadic heartburn because heartburn is the most common indicator of acid reflux disease. While normal heartburn is very irregular, the heartburn symptoms of acid reflux usually appear twice a week for at least three months, and can badly injure your esophagus.
Acid reflux disease occurs when the rise of stomach acid into the esophagus is happens enough to influence the way you live your daily life and/or injure the esophagus. At the top of the stomach there is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which ordinarily opens and closes to let food in. It also works to stop stomach acid from refluxing into your esophagus. The LES will open at inappropriate times if someone suffers from GERD, exposing the esophagus to stomach acid.
Acid reflux disease can result in major health problems that require hospitalization and even surgery. In some acid reflux patients, acid can be regurgitated into the lungs, causing wheezing or cough. A sore throat in acid reflux suffers is the result of acid burning the throat. If acid gets into the mouth it can corrode tooth enamel.. More on Acid Reflux
