Acid reflux and heartburn occurs when vapors from the stomach acid makes contact with the sores on the esophagus. This can be very painful - best described as a burning sensation in the chest. It's best compared to getting acidic vinegar on an open cut.
Drinking orange or tomato juice can be a painful experience for someone with esophagus lesions, as the acid in the juice will burn their throat. Acid reflux disease occurs when the rise of stomach acid into the esophagus is happens enough to damage the esophagus and/or have consequences on you day-to-day living. A muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) is located at the top of your stomach, which, to let food in, normally opens and closes. It also prevents the acid in your stomach from backing up into your esophagus. If someone has GERD, their lower esophageal sphincter will open at the wrong time, exposing the esophagus to stomach acid.
The disease can lead to severe health issues that call for a hospital and maybe surgery. Wheezing or coughing is another symptom of GERD, and occurs when the person gets acid into their lungs. Regurgitation of acid into the throat can create a sore throat. If acid gets into the mouth it can corrode tooth enamel.. More on Acid Reflux
