Why do I get acid reflux?

Acid reflux and heartburn can have different causes. Some of these would include: H. pylori bacterium, an over acidic stomach, eating a large meal, digestive problems or a damaged lower esophageal sphincter.

Most people experience acid reflux because of a damaged (LES) lower esophageal sphincter and esophagus. The harm caused by acid reflux varies - sometimes it is very slight, other times it can be quite major. Nonetheless it can be solved in a very straightforward way!

People experience acid reflux, heartburn etc. because the stomach acid fumes come in contact with the lesions on their esophagus. This can be very painful - like a feeling of scalding in the chest area. It feels similar to getting acidic vinegar in an open wound.

Drinking orange or tomato juice can be a painful experience for someone with esophagus lesions, as the acid in the juice will burn their throat. People that don’t have pain, obviously never get acid reflux or heartburn because their digestive system is in good health.

What is Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux - heartburn diagram Acid Reflux is called Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. When stomach acid is regurgitated back up into the esophagus, it is known as acid reflux, or GERD. Acid reflux is frequently wrongly taken for heartburn because heartburn is its most common symptom! But unlike occasional heartburn, the heartburn symptoms of acid reflux disease usually occur 2 or more days a week for a minimum of three months, and can seriously damage your esophagus.

The disease occurs when the ascension of stomach acid into the esophagus is regular enough to influence your daily life and/or harm the esophagus. Located at the top of your stomach is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which lets food in by opening and shutting. It also works to stop stomach acid from refluxing into your esophagus. The LES will open at inappropriate times if someone suffers from GERD, letting the esophagus be exposed to the strong stomach acid - which is meant to stay in the stomach!

GERD can lead to more acute medical problems that need hospital treatment. Some suffers of GERD can find they develop a wheeze or cough because stomach acid gets into their lungs. Regurgitation of acid into the throat can create a sore throat. If stomach acid enters the mouth it can eat away at tooth enamel.. More on Acid Reflux
