Why do I get acid reflux?

You can get heartburn and acid reflux a mixture of ways. Some of these would include: Digestive problems, a damaged lower esophageal sphincter, an over acidic stomach, eating a large meal or H. pylori bacterium.

Acid reflux is most commonly caused by a damaged lower esophageal sphincter and esophagus. Sometimes this damage from acid reflux is negligible and other times it is very bad. Nonetheless it can be solved in a very straightforward way!

Acid reflux and heartburn occurs when vapors from the stomach acid makes contact with the sores on the esophagus. This will result in pain - a burning sensation in the chest area. It's the same kind of pain as getting acidic vinegar on a cut.

Pain can be felt if you drink tomato or orange juice and the acid in the juice comes into contact with grazes on the esophagus. Clearly, people that don't suffer from that pain don't get acid reflux or heartburn because their digestive system is in good health.

Can I Correct It?

What is Acid Reflux?

Acid Reflux - heartburn diagram GERD is the most common name for Acid Reflux. It is the acronym of the medical term Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Acid reflux (GERD) is the condition where stomach acid is regurgitated into the esophagus. Acid reflux disease (GERD) is often mistaken for occasional heartburn because that is the most common symptom! But unlike occasional heartburn, the heartburn symptoms of acid reflux disease usually occur 2 or more days a week for at least 12 weeks, and can injure your esophagus.

Acid reflux disease is when the acid rises into the esophagus repeatedly enough to influence the way you live your daily life and/or injure the esophagus. Located at the top of your stomach is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), which opens and shuts to let food enter. In addition, it shelters the esophagus by preventing stomach acid from refluxing. With GERD, the LES opens at the incorrect time, opening up the esophagus and allowing stomach acid to come into contact with it.

GERD can result in critical medical conditions that necessitate hospital stays and possibly surgery. In some acid reflux patients, acid can be regurgitated into the lungs, causing wheezing or cough. If stomach acid gets all the way up into the throat, it can result in pain (or a 'sore throat'). Tooth enamel can be corroded by stomach acid if it reaches the mouth.. More on Acid Reflux
