Why do I get acid reflux?
Acid reflux and heartburn can be the result of a variety of things. Some of these include: Eating a large meal, an over-acidic stomach, H. pylori bacterium, a damaged lower esophageal sphincter or digestive problems.
A damaged LES (lower esophageal sphincter) and esophagus is the most common reason for acid reflux. The acid reflux hurt can be tiny, or it can be huge. However it is easily cured!
Acid reflux, heartburn happens when abrasions on the esophagus are brought into contact with fumes from the stomach acid. This will be sore - a sense of burning in the chest region. It's the same feeling as getting acid on a cut.
If someone is experiencing pain when they drink acidic juice (like orange or tomato) they probably have a damaged esophagus. Clearly, if someone doesn't get that pain they won't suffer from acid reflux or heartburn because their digestive organs are working effectively.

What is Acid Reflux?
Acid Reflux often called GERD - an abbreviation of the medical term Gastroesophageal reflux disease. Acid reflux (GERD) is the regurgitation (back up, or refluxed) of stomach acid into the esophagus. Acid reflux disease can sometimes be taken for irregular heartburn because heartburn is the most frequent symptom of GERD. But unlike occasional heartburn, the heartburn symptoms of acid reflux disease usually occur 2 or more days a week for at least 12 weeks, and can injure your esophagus.
Acid reflux disease occurs when the rise of stomach acid into the esophagus is happens enough to influence your daily life and/or harm the esophagus. At the top of the stomach there is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which ordinarily opens and closes to let food in. It also protects the esophagus by not allowing stomach acid up. If someone has GERD, their lower esophageal sphincter will open at the wrong time, letting the esophagus be exposed to the strong stomach acid - which is meant to stay in the stomach!
GERD can result in critical medical conditions that require hospitalization and even surgery. In some acid reflux patients, acid can be regurgitated into the lungs, causing wheezing or cough. If stomach acid gets all the way up into the throat, it can result in pain (or a 'sore throat'). If stomach acid enters the mouth it can eat away at tooth enamel.. More on Acid Reflux
