Specifically, what causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes the skin irritation known as a "cold sore". Chances are you've heard of "herpes" before, but a lot of people don't realize there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) mostly infects tissue above the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in 60% of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is also known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted virus. Herpes simplex virus type 2 isn't usually the type that causes cold sores, but it can in around 40% of cases.

How do people get exposed to the herpes simplex virus that causes their cold sores?
