Why do cold sores keep coming back?
The herpes simplex virus is the cause of cold sores. Don't jump ahead of yourself when you hear the word "herpes". There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) commonly infects body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in many cases.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type two (HSV2) infects body tissue below the waistline, and is also known as "genital herpes". Herpes simplex virus type 2 isn't usually the type that causes cold sores, but it can in around 40% of cases.
How do people catch HSV1?
A lot pf people assume if they have an infection they have only just been exposed to the germ that causes it. This is not the case with cold sores. The herpes virus is not caught every time you have a cold sore. After you have caught it, the virus simply lies dormant and reactivates when your body is run down (through stress, etc), resulting in recurring cold sores.
