What causes cold sores?

Cold sores are generated by the herpes simplex virus. There are actually two kinds of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
"Genital herpes" is a more common name for herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2), and is a sexually transmitted disease. HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.

How do people get HSV1?
