What exactly causes cold sores?

Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. No doubt you've heard of "herpes" before, but there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
It is herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) that causes cold sores in the majority of cases. It generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline".

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) typically only infects those body tissues that lie "below the waistline" and it is this virus that is also known as "genital herpes". HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.

How do people catch herpes simplex virus type one?

When you have an infection you usually assume you were exposed to the germ which has caused your problem a short time ago. This isn't correct when it comes to cold sores. The herpes virus is not caught every time you have a cold sore. After you have caught it, the virus simply lies dormant and reactivates when your body is run down (through stress, etc), resulting in recurring cold sores.
