What causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes cold sores. Don't jump ahead of yourself when you hear the word "herpes". There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is commonly known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted disease. Herpes simplex virus type 2 isn't usually the type that causes cold sores, but it can in around 40% of cases.

How do people get exposed to the herpes simplex virus that causes their cold sores?

People often assume that if they have an infection they were only recently exposed to the germ that causes it. This isn't true in the instance of cold sores.
