What actually causes cold sores?

Cold sores are a product of the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) ordinarily infects those body tissues that over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is also known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted virus. Although HSV2 can cause cold sores, it is less common that HSV1.
