What causes cold sores to recur?

Cold sores are generated by the herpes simplex virus. There are actually two kinds of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) usually infects body tissues that lie "above the waistline". In most cases, it is type one that causes cold sores.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type two (HSV2) is usually a sexually transmitted disease, also known as genital herpes. Although Herpes simplex virus type two can cause cold sores, it is a less common occurrence than with HSV1.
