Why do cold sores keep coming back?

Cold sores are a product of the herpes simplex virus. You've probably heard of "herpes" before, but don't jump to conclusions! There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) mostly infects tissue above the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in 60% of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
