Why do cold sores keep coming back?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Chances are you've heard of "herpes" before, but a lot of people don't realize there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
It is generally herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) that causes cold sores. It usually infects body tissues that lie above the waistline.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) commonly infects the genital area (genital herpes). HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.
How do people catch herpes simplex virus type one?
When you have an infection you usually assume you were exposed to the germ which has caused your problem a short time ago. This isn't correct when it comes to cold sores. The herpes virus is not caught every time you have a cold sore.
