What specifically causes cold sores?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Don't jump ahead of yourself when you hear the word "herpes". There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) typically infects those body tissues that lie over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) commonly infects the genital area (genital herpes). HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.
How do people get HSV1?
When you have an infection you usually assume you were exposed to the germ which has caused your problem a short time ago. However, cold sores are different.
