What really causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes the skin irritation known as a "cold sore". There are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) ordinarily infects those body tissues that over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type two (HSV2) is usually a sexually transmitted disease, also known as genital herpes. Although HSV2 can cause cold sores, it is less common that HSV1.
