What exactly causes cold sores?

Cold sores are generated by the herpes simplex virus. Don't jump ahead of yourself when you hear the word "herpes". There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) ordinarily infects those body tissues that over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is also known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted virus. HSV2 doesn't cause cold sores as commonly as HSV1.
