What causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes cold sores. You've probably heard of "herpes" before, but don't jump to conclusions! There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is also known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted virus. HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.
