What causes cold sores to recur?

The herpes simplex virus generates cold sores. Chances are you've heard of "herpes" before, but a lot of people don't realize there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) ordinarily infects those body tissues that over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) typically only infects the genital area, and it is also known as genital herpes. HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.

How do people get HSV1?
