Why do cold sores keep coming back?

The herpes simplex virus causes the skin irritation known as a "cold sore". There are actually two kinds of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.
