What exactly causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes cold sores. No doubt you've heard of "herpes" before, but there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
It is herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) that causes cold sores in the majority of cases. It generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline".

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
"Genital herpes" is a more common name for herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2), and is a sexually transmitted disease. Herpes simplex virus type 2 isn't usually the type that causes cold sores, but it can in around 40% of cases.
