What causes cold sores to recur?

Cold sores are a symptom of the herpes simplex virus. There are actually two kinds of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) typically infects those body tissues that lie over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is also known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted virus. Although HSV2 can cause cold sores, it is less common that HSV1.

How do people get HSV1?
