What actually causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes the skin irritation known as a "cold sore". You've probably heard of "herpes" before, but don't jump to conclusions! There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) typically infects those body tissues that lie over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type two (HSV2) is usually a sexually transmitted disease, also known as genital herpes. Although Herpes simplex virus type two can cause cold sores, it is a less common occurrence than with HSV1.
