What causes cold sores?

Cold sores are generated by the herpes simplex virus. There are actually two kinds of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type one (HSV1) mostly infects tissue above the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in 60% of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type two (HSV2) infects body tissue below the waistline, and is also known as "genital herpes". HSV2 doesn't cause cold sores as commonly as HSV1.
