Specifically, what causes cold sores?
The herpes simplex virus causes the skin irritation known as a "cold sore". No doubt you've heard of "herpes" before, but don't jump ahead of yourself. There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) typically infects those body tissues that lie over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) typically only infects those body tissues that lie "below the waistline" and it is this virus that is also known as "genital herpes". HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.
How do people get herpes simplex virus type one?
Generally, people believe infections are caused by recent exposure to some kind of germ. Cold sores are not brought about in this way though. When cold sores occur, they are not a sign of a recently acquired herpes simplex infection, but a reactivation of virus particles already living in your body.
