What really causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes cold sores. Chances are you've heard of "herpes" before, but a lot of people don't realize there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) commonly infects body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in many cases.
