What actually causes cold sores?
Cold sores are a product of the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) typically infects those body tissues that lie over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) typically only infects the genital area, and it is also known as genital herpes. HSV2 doesn't cause cold sores as commonly as HSV1.
How do people catch herpes simplex virus type one?
When you have an infection you usually assume you were exposed to the germ which has caused your problem a short time ago. In the instance of cold sores, this is not the case. When cold sores occur, they are not a sign of a recently acquired herpes simplex infection, but a reactivation of virus particles already living in your body.
