What specifically causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus causes cold sores. No doubt you've heard of "herpes" before, but there are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) typically infects those body tissues that lie over the waistline, and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in most cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type two (HSV2) is usually a sexually transmitted disease, also known as genital herpes. HSV2 isn't usually the virus which causes cold sores, but it can do so.

How is HSV1 passed on?
