What exactly causes cold sores?

The herpes simplex virus generates cold sores. Don't jump ahead of yourself when you hear the word "herpes". There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type one" and "type two".

Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.

Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
"Genital herpes" is a more common name for herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2), and is a sexually transmitted disease. HSV2 doesn't cause cold sores as commonly as HSV1.
