What causes cold sores?
The herpes simplex virus generates cold sores. There are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in the majority of cases.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) typically only infects the genital area, and it is also known as genital herpes. Although HSV2 can cause cold sores, it is less common that HSV1.
How do people get HSV1?
When you imagine having an infection you commonly believe you were just exposed to the germ which has brought about your problem. This is not the case with cold sores. The herpes virus is not caught every time you have a cold sore. After you have caught it, the virus simply lies dormant and reactivates when your body is run down (through stress, etc), resulting in recurring cold sores.
