Specifically, what causes cold sores?
The herpes simplex virus is the cause of cold sores. No doubt you've heard of "herpes" before, but don't jump ahead of yourself. There are actually two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
It is herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) that causes cold sores in the majority of cases. It generally only infects those body tissues that lie "above the waistline".
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
"Genital herpes" is a more common name for herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2), and is a sexually transmitted disease. HSV2 isn't usually the virus which causes cold sores, but it can do so.
How do people catch herpes simplex virus type one?
When you imagine having an infection you commonly believe you were just exposed to the germ which has brought about your problem. Cold sores are not brought about in this way though. The herpes virus is not caught every time you have a cold sore. After you have caught it, the virus simply lies dormant and reactivates when your body is run down (through stress, etc), resulting in recurring cold sores.
