What causes cold sores?
Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types of herpes simplex virus, "type 1" and "type 2".
Type 1 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) commonly infects body tissues that lie "above the waistline" and it is HSV1 that causes cold sores in many cases.
Type 2 herpes simplex virus.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) is commonly known as "genital herpes" and is a sexually transmitted disease. HSV2 can cause cold sores, but it is not as common as HSV1.
How do people get exposed to herpes simplex virus type one?
When you think of having an infection you usually assume that you were recently exposed to the germ which has caused your problem. This isn't true in the instance of cold sores. The herpes virus is not caught every time you have a cold sore. After you have caught it, the virus simply lies dormant and reactivates when your body is run down (through stress, etc), resulting in recurring cold sores.
